Albicchiere Smart Wine Platform
Serverless cloud backend and business web app for a connected wine-dispensing device, built from the ground up on AWS.
What it is
Albicchiere makes a smart home wine dispenser that preserves open bottles with argon gas. The platform needed a cloud backend to handle device telemetry, user accounts, and remote control — none of which existed when I joined.
How it works
The backend is fully serverless on AWS, chosen to match the startup’s scale-to-zero economics and unpredictable device traffic spikes.
AWS services wired together:
- Lambda — business logic functions per command (pour, purge, configure)
- IoT Core — bi-directional MQTT channel to physical devices
- DynamoDB — device state, pour history, and user preferences
- SQS — decoupled command queue so device retries don’t block the API
- SES — transactional email (activation, alerts)
- S3 — firmware binaries and static assets
The business web app (Angular) consumed the REST API surface backed by these Lambda functions.
What I’d do next
- WebSocket push for real-time device status instead of polling
- Time-series analytics on pour data (DynamoDB → Timestream)
- OTA firmware update pipeline via S3 + IoT Jobs
